About Us

Our Vision

School and Community Music in Port Moody co-exist in a flourishing  environment for the arts throughout all stages of life and levels of musicianship.

Our Mission

To provide an opportunity for musicians in the Tri-Cities to be involved in large ensemble music making and to support the school programs in their provision of a quality music education.

Our Story

In 1992, Gord Hembruff began a set of community bands to encourage music making in Port Moody, and to support the music program at Port Moody Secondary School. In 1997, he developed the Port Moody Community Music Society as an organization that encompassed these groups to help unify their mission. Over the years, the directors changed, but the band remained. Unfortunately, in 2020, operations had to halt and that was the end of the community band program. However, in 2024, a group of local musicians decided to put the band back together, and here we are today! Although the logo has changed, and the people are different, the mission is still the same; provide the opportunity to participate in community music in Port Moody, City of the Arts.

Our Values

We believe that all members of the community should have access to high quality music programming. The Port Moody Community Music Society is committed to making sure that all members of our community are welcome both in our ensembles and at our performances regardless of the colour of their skin, the cultures they come from, their sexuality, disabilities, or their religious beliefs. The PMCMS commits to ensuring that we are an inclusive, discrimination free organization where all members have a place that they can feel safe, valued, and welcome.

A Long History of Excellence

Since the 1960's, Port Moody has a well documented history of excellence in music education. From one of the original greats Pete Stiggings (pictured left) to more contemporary directors such as John White and Gord Hembruff, Port Moody has long been a place of excellence in band music. Between Rocky Point Park Amphitheatre, the Inlet Theatre and Heritage Woods Secondary's Theatre, we have plenty of venues and opportunities to showcase the amazing work being done locally. The best way to keep that going? Stay involved! If you are interested in joining our ensemble, or would like to come support one of our concerts, please feel free to reach out through our contact page.
